The 105 series Giulia was launched in 1962, a development of 1300cc Giulietta. The Giulietta had established the post war Alfa template of a progressively engineered car, aimed at a sporting driver. It wasn´t cheap, but it offered quality and value. The 1962 Giulia introduced a larger 1570 cc version of the twin cam engine, at first in a 3 box sedan body.
The car was criticized for its shape, which (like many Alfas) seems more stylish today than when it was new. The shape is surprisingly aerodynamic and was the first production car to be designed around a safety cell for its passengers. The Giulia´s twin cam motor was matched to a 5 speed gearbox, 4 wheel disc brakes and a chassis which was invariably praised by keen drivers.
The 105 series sedan was designed in house, the coupe by Giugario for Bertone, the Spider was by Pininfarina and Zagato made the most radically sporting model, the Junior Zagato. The 105 series had a long and successful career in motor sport, mainly on the circuits with Chiti´s GTA coupes but beginning with the sedan Super Ti.
The sedan was released with 1570cc, but later a 1300cc Ti version was introduced. This was the best selling Giulia, enjoying special tax rates in Italy, and some enthusiasts prefer the addictively revvy 1300cc version. With a 90bhp output and advanced handling characteristics, even the most humble of the 105 series gives enormous driving pleasure, but remains a civilized way to travel for the passengers.
This is a 1968 Alfa Romeo 1300Ti, which gives 90 bhp through a single Weber carburetor. It is finished in the unusual (original) colour of Grau Grafito (Graphite Grey) and has been re-trimmed in a non-standard (but higher quality) cloth material. Equally, the standard factory rubber mats have been complimented by more elegant and practical fitted overmats.
This pride in ownership shows throughout the car, evidence that it has always been cherished. The car was originally sold to Portugal, but exported to Spain (Canary Isles) in 2006. As well as being re-trimmed, the car has an older respray in its original colours. It is complete and well-presented in every respect, a rust free example which has obviously had an easy life.
