SL Mercedes were born with the legendary 300SL series in the mid 1950s, the “Gullwing” coupé itself based on the 300SLR racing cars of the early 50s (Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Carrera Pan Americana etc). The SL (Light Sports) series continued with the 300SL convertibles of the late 50s and early 60s.
The second generation was the Paul Bracq designed “Pagoda” (1963-1971), smaller (2.3-2.8 litre), elegant cars designed for comfort rather than speed. The 3rd R107 series (1972-1989) was larger and heavier car, with no sporting pretensions, although available with 6 cylinder (2.8/3.0 litre) and V8 (3.5 to 5.0 litre) engines, very often coupled with an automatic gearbox.
This concept of the SL as a soft boulevardier was realigned in the 4th series R129 (1989-2003), which could be had with 6.0 and 7.0 V12 engines, capable of a limited 250kph on the Autobahn. This reversion to power and presence continued with the subsequent SL R230 (2003-12). This was a totally new design with 21st century tech, of which this car is an example.
This Mercedes SL500 was originally registered in Germany in 2005, being imported an registered in Spain just 3 months later. The car is equipped with a 5.0 litre V8 which puts out approx 310CV. This car has already covered 500.000 kilometres in the hands of its previous owner, but remains in turn key condition, ready and capable of giving many more still.
